Mausoleum of Shah Rukn-i-Alam-Multan

Pakistan, especially the city of Multan is rooted in deep religious beliefs that have been instilled by some of the greatest of Islamic and Sufi saints and the city has in turn provided just commemoration to these great souls by dotting the land area of the city with numerous Mausoleums and tombs which shelter the bodily remains and relics of these saints. Many of these mausoleums date back to the pre-mogul times and the most significant of these is the Mausoleum of Shah Rukn-i-Alam-Multan, regarded as a masterpiece in its own rights.

Dedicated to Hazrat Shah Eukn-e-Alam, the grandson of Shaikh Bahauddin Zakaria, the Mausoleum of Shah Rukn-i-Alam-Multan was constructed in the 14th Century and the architectural magnificence of this place is simply outstanding. Initially built as a part of the family mausoleum by the ruler Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, as a tribute to the great saint, he gifted it to the saint’s family.

Situated in a compound within the Fort area, the mausoleum comprises of three stories and displays a shape that is a perfect octagon. Having an interior diameter of about fifteen meters, its entire structure including walls of around twelve one meter in height and eight meters in width is supported by slopping towers kept at an angle. Above the tower is a giant dome having a diameter of about fifteen meters. The whole mausoleum is thirty five meters in height and its red color rendered by the same colored bricks can be distinguished from a place far from the site of Mausoleum of Shah Rukn-i-Alam-Multan. On the exterior of the building is found frameworks made of shisam wood as well as bricks and wood which have been sculpted and designed with blue and white tiles to bring ornamentation and beauty to the mausoleum.

Even to this day, the Mausoleum of Shah Rukn-i-Alam-Multan is venerated by people all over the nation of Pakistan as well as other places in the world. The significance has reached far and wide, attracting more than hundred thousand devotees and pilgrims to the place through out the year.
