Lahore Zoo

The Lahore Zoo, which is located in the city of Lahore in the Punjab Province of Pakistan, was founded in the year 1872. The Lahore Zoo was earlier assumed to be one of the biggest zoos of Asia.

The Lahore Zoo which was opened as a small bird sanctuary, which was built under the patronage of Lal Muhandra Ram. Eventually the Lahore Zoo was modernized and the varieties as well as the number of animals increased in this zoo.

At present the Lahore Zoo in Pakistan is home to over 1381 creatures which belong to136 animal species comprising 336 faunas of 45 species, 996 birds belonging to 82 species and 49 members of reptilian species. From 1872, the Lahore Zoo continued to be administered by the Lahore Municipal Corporation till 1923, when the controlling power of this zoo was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore. The Lahore Zoo remained under the power of the Deputy Commissioner till the year 1962.

The controlling power of the Lahore Zoo was then taken by the Livestock and Dairy Development Department of Lahore. Lastly in 1982, the responsibility of looking after the zoo was given to the Wildlife & Parks Department, under whose administration, a number of progressive changes had been made in the Lahore Zoo making it a self-supporting and self-reliant organization. Situated in the heart of the city, Lahore Zoo is also home to a beautiful botanical garden which has got 1280 trees belonging to almost 71 species, 30 species of wild birds and 100 species of vertebrates and invertebrates. The main objectives of the Lahore Zoo for which it is working, are propagation of the endangered species, re-introduction of animal species in the wild, providing opportunities of executing educational research work for educational purposes and creating love for nature amongst the general masses. Various up-gradation procedures are at present being executed in the Lahore Zoo including re-modeling of accessible facilities as well as adding up of new facilities.
