Thatta is a historical town located in Sindh province in Pakistan. This town is located close to Lake Keenjhar, the biggest freshwater lake in Pakistan. Major monuments of Thatta- Sindh are enlisted in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The town of Thatta is picturesque and a famous tourist spot in Pakistan.
Thatta is located at a distance of 98 kilometers from Karachi, to the west of the coast of the Arabian Sea and the Indus River. Thatta is rich with Islamic architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. The historical remains of Thatta include mosques, mausoleums and tombs. Most of them are well preserved and bespeaks of Thatta’s rich past. The surrounding environment of Thatta is rocky and barren areas and the marshy Indus delta. A tour to Thatta will bring out Mughal architecture and the beautiful landscape of the surrounding regions of Thatta.
The city of Thatta formerly was in command of the Indus delta. During 14th century it was the capital city of Lower Sindh region. After the Mughal conquest it was ruled under the name of the Mughal emperors in Delhi since 1592. In 1739 Thatta was ceded to Nadir Shah, the ruler of Persia.

Thatta is full of historical and grand monuments. The Jama Mosque is one of the beautiful architecture in Thatta. It is also known as Badshahi Mosque or Shahjehani Mosque. The mosque was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jehan during 1647-49. The mosque has 101 domes and the design allows the Imam’s voice to reach every part of the mosque without a loudspeaker.
In Thatta-Sindh there are many tombs. Among them the tomb of Jam Nizamuddin who was the ruler of Thatta from 1461 to 1509, tombs of Mughal officials and Tarkhan rulers are important.
Visit Makli Hills, which is an old and vast necropolis located in Thatta.
